July 2009
St Kilda Sea Baths commited to state of the art

St Kilda Sea Baths has announced a major upgrade of their indoor Sea Water pool.

Operating since 1860, the venue back then was, like today a sea water pool, gymnasium and ‘refreshment’ rooms. It is Australia’s only indoor, heated and filtered sea water pool and is set to undergo a ‘state of the art’ upgrade that will keep it on the cutting edge of technology, cosmetic appeal and ‘thalassotherapy’*

Neil Locke, South Pacific Health Club Manager said: We are proud of this amazing community facility and these upgrades will allow us to continue to provide this incredible ‘tonic’ (sea water) to our customers and members in an outstanding and unique environment.

The schedule of works will be carried out over two phases with some minor disruption to the facility.

Phase 1 – 2nd July to 15th July 2009

Closure of pool for a 2 week period.
Removal of the existing roof structure and cover with a temporary roof.
Pool re-opens on 16th July in time for Learn to Swim Classes

Phase 2 – 21st September 2009 for approximately six weeks.

· Closure of the pool for approximately six weeks.
· Installation of new SunPal Roofing System
· Upgrade of ventilation systems
· New Internal design works
· Pool re-opens after about seven weeks

These works will ensure the facility remains cutting edge. It is much more than a cosmetic upgrade of our facilities, people will feel more like they are outside due to improved light and air systems but will have the luxury of a temperature controlled, filtered, sea water facility. It will be an even better place for serious training, recovery, relaxing or learning to swim and will cause nominal inconvenience to our customers. said Neil.

The St Kilda Sea Baths pool is unique in that it pumps in fresh seawater directly from Port Phillip Bay. It is purified by massive sand filtration tanks and is heated to a very pleasant temperature. Kids are more buoyant in sea water so amongst the other offerings, there is a full swim school program, designed to learn to swim with confidence.

At the ‘Bay’ end of the pool there is a hot spa which is a great place to relax and watch the ever changing vistas of Port Phillip Bay and the foreshore. The pool also includes steam rooms and change facilities.

In addition to the pool, the St Kilda Sea Baths complex houses some of Melbourne’s finest bars, café’s, restaurants, an amazing health club and an internationally awarded Day Spa.
